Description

With the Government’s triggering of Article 50 to begin the formal withdrawal from the European Union imminent, Keir Starmer, Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, joins us in April to discuss the legal implications of Brexit.

“The Government are about to embark on the most complex and challenging undertaking of any British Government since the Second World War. The decisions the Government make and the deals they strike will have profound consequences for almost every aspect of British life. It is therefore essential that the Government do not fail or take the country down the wrong path” said Keir recently in a House of Commons debate on Brexit.

Keir’s role in Brexit is to lead the Opposition in holding the Government to account on the policy work to support the UK’s negotiations to leave the European Union and to establish the future relationship between the EU and the UK. Working closely with the UK’s devolved administrations, Parliament, and a wide range of other interested parties on what the approach to those negotiations should be and leading and co-ordinating cross-government work to seize the opportunities and ensure a smooth process of exit on the best possible terms.

Elected Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras in May 2015, Keir was formerly a Barrister. Called to the Bar in 1987 he co-founded Doughty Street Chambers in 1990 where he specialised in Human Rights and was awarded Silk in 2002. He was human rights advisor to the Policing Board in Northern Ireland 2003-2008 and named QC of the Year in 2007. Keir was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008-2013. Following the successful retrial of the Stephen Lawrence case in 2012 Keir led a task force, with Lady Doreen Lawrence and the former Thames Valley Chief Constable Peter Neyroud, providing recommendations for improving the way victims of crime are dealt with the criminal justice system.
